First sewing project

As I mentioned last month, I bought a sewing machine.
It had been on my wish list for ages, but for one reason or another, I delayed it .
At the beginning of March, however, I decided it was time to invest some money on a little domestic machine which could help me to materialize all those projects on my forever-increasing sewing folder. I suppose the real reason to finally make a decision was the absurdly inexpensive fabric prices in Bucharest: I simply coudn´t stand the view of all those affordable materials within easy reach!
I could feel their sad looks at me.

“Take us home” they would say with their tiny voices. “We want to turn ouselves into pretty dresses!”

So how could I posibly refuse?
It was far too cruel...

So I bought a small and pretty Toyota machine, and after a little outing to the closest haberdasher´s,
I embarked on my first sewing adventure!
I downloaded some pencil skirt pattern tutorial and it didn´t look too difficult to start with, so I made this striped skirt in a couple of spare evenings, and once it was finished a matching bolero looked like a reasonable side-project.
Nonetheless, it wasn´t as easy as I expected, and even now I must make some arrangments on it to fix it properly. I consider the skirt to be done for now, but the little bolero is a different story...

Both clothing are full of imperfections, as I comited literally TONS of beginer mistakes through the whole process. As I said, the shrug is remakably unfinished, and I must make the whole buttons line again in order to make the piece completely symmetric.
But well, I try not to be too negative and critic with myself, as this was just my first project.
The gloves are DIY too, although I made them a couple of years ago.

So tell me darlings, are you keen on crafting/sewing/DIY?

    1. Hi there Lis!

You can find reasonable prices in any fabric shop arpund Bucharest. Nonetheless, I would recomend visiting Obor market if you have got spare time enough, as they seem to have got any fabric in the world and their prices are slightly cheaper than other places. I hope it helps! :)

    2. thank you^^
I was actually at Obor around Chrismas and they had pretty much the same prices as here in The Netherlands where I live. I actually found some things a bit expensive but oh well that is I guess the price I've got to pay if I want good quality materials.

    3. You are very welcome. I am quite shocked about what you mentioned about the prices, maybe they are far more expensive in Spain? This Christmas I bought a great embroidered fabric for my wedding gown for about 40 euros a meter, which can cost easily double price in Spain. When visiting Obor, just be sure to pay attention to little stores, they always offer better chances :)

  4. Hello! I loved the pieces of clothing that you did this first project ... I love the idea of creating things that are part of your style. I wanted to learn to sew, but never chasten me in starting, and now my routine is killing me and there's no time for that ...
Occasionally I create some things too, but sew still do not know.

    Kisses :*

    1. Welcome Mayara and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
To be honest, I am simply learning how to sew along the way, or trying to figure it out, anyway :P
I find Youtube tutorial very helpful, as well as the bunch of websites showing tutorials and patterns out there, so I would advice not to be afraid of trying.

  5. Wow, you just jump right in and get going on the most difficult projects ever, don't you Violette! No beginner shift dresses with no buttons or zippers for you! LOL

I think you did an amazing job of that skirt, and once you get the bolero lined up properly it will look fantastic! I'm envious of the cheap fabric in Bucharest. I went into our only fabric store in Calgary a few weeks ago and it was utter garbage. And it wasn't cheap either - $25/metre for most of them. Shameful! But I've had very bad luck ordering fabric online. Sometimes it arrives and just shreds when you pull on it. :(

    1. Hahahaha. Yes, you have a point in there, Insomiac. I think I am naturally (too) optimistic sometimes, so I never see the catastrophe coming until is too late.

I consider myself very fortunate in terms of material purchasing. In Spain fabric is awfully expensive, a bit in the line of Calgary prices, so I was never brave enough to learn how to sew in the past, as I was too afraid of ruining such valuable kind of material. It is ok now, though, as even if I spoil the project it is not big money.

    1. Hey, Laura! Thank you very much for your nice words. I think they are not great pieces, but I am confident about being able to improve in the future. Everything is a question of practise, isn´t it?
